How to Free Up WhatsApp Storage on iPhone Without Losing Your Chats
WhatsApp taking up too much space on iPhone? Find the biggest chats and media, stop auto-saving to Photos and clear copies without losing chats.

WhatsApp is often one of the largest apps in iPhone Storage, and most of that space is not the messages themselves. It is photos, videos, voice notes, documents and stickers people send you, plus forwarded clips that arrive in several group chats at once. On many phones, the same media also ends up in the Photos library, so it takes space twice.
This guide shows how to see what WhatsApp is storing, delete the large items first, stop new media from filling your library, and remove the copies that WhatsApp's own tools do not touch.
Check How Much Space WhatsApp Uses
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and tap WhatsApp. The App Size line is the app itself; Documents & Data is your chats and the media stored inside WhatsApp. If Documents & Data is several gigabytes, media is the reason.
Do not use Offload App to fix this. Offloading removes only the app and keeps its documents and data, so it frees very little for WhatsApp. Deleting the app would remove the data, but also your chats unless you have a backup.
Use WhatsApp's Manage Storage Tool
WhatsApp has a built-in storage manager. In current versions it is under Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage; the exact path can differ slightly between app versions. It shows how much space WhatsApp uses on your phone and groups media in a way that makes large items easy to find.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage.
- Open the section for large files (labelled larger than 5 MB in many versions), or the list of items forwarded many times.
- Tap Select, choose the items you no longer need and delete them.
- Scroll down to the chat list, open the chats using the most space and repeat; each chat's media is listed from largest to smallest.
Deleting media this way removes it from WhatsApp, but it does not delete the text messages in the chat. Starred items can be kept: when your selection includes starred media, WhatsApp offers to delete everything except starred items.
Stop WhatsApp From Saving Media to Photos
If WhatsApp saves incoming media to your camera roll, every photo and video you receive is stored twice: once in WhatsApp and once in Photos. Turning this off does not affect media already saved, but it stops the problem from growing.
- For all chats: open WhatsApp Settings > Chats and turn off Save to Photos.
- For one busy group: open the chat, tap its name, then set Save to Photos to Never.
- Consider muting very active groups so you open, and save, less of their media.
Clear the Copies Already in Your Photos Library
Media that WhatsApp has already saved to Photos stays there after you delete it in WhatsApp. These copies are often forwarded videos, memes and screenshots you never meant to keep. In the Photos app, the WhatsApp album (if present) or the Recents view sorted by date is a starting point, but reviewing thousands of images by hand is slow.
Photos Cleaner - Cleanup Phone can find images saved from messaging apps, duplicates and similar photos, and large videos in your Photos library, group them and let you review them before anything is deleted. It works only with the Photos library you give it access to: it cannot see or delete media stored inside WhatsApp itself, so use WhatsApp's Manage Storage for that part. Deleted items go to Recently Deleted, where you can recover them for up to 30 days.
Check Your Backup Settings
WhatsApp's chat backup on iPhone goes to iCloud, so it uses iCloud storage rather than iPhone storage. If your iCloud plan is full, open WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and check whether videos are included; excluding them makes the backup smaller.
Before deleting large amounts of media, run a fresh backup if there is anything you might want later. Media deleted from WhatsApp generally cannot be recovered from the app.

Frequently asked questions
Why is WhatsApp taking up so much space on my iPhone?▼
Mostly because of media: photos, videos, voice notes and documents from chats, especially busy groups. If Save to Photos is on, the same media is also stored in your Photos library.
Can I clear WhatsApp storage without deleting chats?▼
Yes. Use Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage in WhatsApp to delete media while keeping your text messages.
Does offloading WhatsApp free up space?▼
Very little. Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, which is where WhatsApp's media is stored.
If I delete a photo in WhatsApp, is it deleted from Photos?▼
No. Copies saved to your Photos library stay there until you delete them in Photos.
Does WhatsApp backup use iPhone storage?▼
WhatsApp chat backups on iPhone are stored in iCloud, so they count against your iCloud storage rather than your iPhone storage.
